CREATE is a non-government organisation based in Pietermaritzburg, the capital of KwaZulu Natal province in South Africa. We focus on advocacy for disability rights and community based rehabilitation in its broadest sense. We work with disabled people’s organisations, parents groups, communities, municipalities and government departments as well as other NGOs and businesses.
Our expertise is in training and advocacy work. We are skilled at developing participatory training courses supported with interactive materials for participants at a variety of literacy levels in both English and isiZulu. Our advocacy and lobbying activities take place at local, provincial, national and even international levels. CREATE spearheaded the writing of the first shadow report on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities from South Africa in 2010. A section of this report was read to the United Nations Conference of State parties in New York in September 2010 by the UN Special Rapporteur on Disability, Mr Shuaib Chalklen.
