Disability Inclusion for Oxfam Partners

At the beginning of 2012, Oxfam Australia approached CREATE to assist them in getting five of their partner organisation to become fully disability inclusive. These partners of Oxfam are based in KwaZulu-Natal and are receiving funding for projects related to water, sanitation and hygiene. As no such project has been embarked on previously in South Africa for Oxfam, CREATE has spent time researching work on disability inclusion questionnaire which has been used in conducting a baseline study at each partner organisation. CREATE staff have also learned much about provision of water sanitation and hygiene and how to make these services accessible to people with disabilities. The partner organisations: Woza Moya, Fancy Stitch, Maputaland Development and Information Centre, Tholulwazi Uzivikele and Save the Children KZN have all taught CREATE a lot about their respective fields of work and the geographical communities in which they work.

Achievements

  • Baseline study conducted at each of the 5 partner organisation
  • Disability awareness-raising workshops held for staff each partner organisation
  • Woza Moya has built ramps and an accessible toilet at their premises following out intervention
  • Disability inclusion is on the agenda at all Oxfam Australia events with partner in South Africa.

Future plans

During the period form 2012 to 2015 CREATE will continue to work with organisations that are funded by Oxfam in South Africa. Initially we will be training staff and home based carers of Woza Moya and Tholulwazi Uzivikele to include people with disabilities in their work. We also hope to work with Fancy Stitch and the municipality in Ingwavuma to build accessible public toilets. Our work will also include workshops and interaction with Oxfam to get their own organisation disability friendly. During 2013-2013 CREATE will also be writing a background paper on disability in South Africa that can assist Oxfam and its partners as they work on disability inclusion.
